The Story Behind Baldi Baldi

Baldi Baldi is officially known as Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, or Baldi's Basics for short. It is a game created by Micah McGonigal under the name Basically Games. He made it for a game jam called Meta Game Jam in 2018. The theme of the jam was "subversive games", which means games that subvert or twist the expectations of the players or the genre. McGonigal decided to make a game that looked like an educational game from the 90s but was actually a horror game with absurd humor.

The game was inspired by McGonigal's childhood memories of playing edutainment games such as Reader Rabbit and Math Blaster, as well as his love for horror games such as Slender: The Eight Pages and Five Nights at Freddy's. He also drew inspiration from internet memes, such as the "You Can Think Pad" from Dora the Explorer and the "Gotta Sweep" from The Simpsons.

The game was made in less than two weeks using the Unity game engine and a free 3D modeling software called Anim8or. McGonigal did most of the work himself, including the programming, the graphics, the sound effects, and the voice acting. He also used some royalty-free assets from online sources, such as the music and some of the textures. He uploaded the game to itch.io, a website for indie games, on March 31, 2018.

The game quickly became a viral hit on the internet, thanks to its quirky and unexpected gameplay, its low-quality graphics, its catchy music, and its memorable characters. Many popular YouTubers and streamers played the game and shared their reactions with their audiences, such as Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, DanTDM, PewDiePie, and more. The game also spawned a large fan community that created fan art, fan fiction, fan games, mods, memes, and more based on Baldi Baldi. As of June 2023, the game has over 10 million downloads on itch.io and over 1.5 million followers on Game Jolt.

How to Play Baldi Baldi

The Game Modes

Baldi Baldi has three main game modes that you can choose from: story mode, endless mode, and demo style. Each mode has a different objective and difficulty level.

  • Story mode: This is the default mode of the game. In this mode, you play as a student who visits Baldi's schoolhouse to collect seven notebooks for your friend. However, you soon realize that Baldi is not a friendly teacher, but a psychotic ruler-wielding maniac who chases you around the school if you get any math problem wrong. You have to collect all seven notebooks and escape the school before Baldi catches you. This mode has three difficulty levels: easy, normal, and hard. The higher the difficulty level, the faster Baldi moves, the more math problems you have to solve, and the more obstacles you have to face.

  • Endless mode: This is a mode that was added in a later update of the game. In this mode, you play as a student who visits Baldi's schoolhouse to collect as many notebooks as possible without getting caught by Baldi. There is no end to this mode; you can keep collecting notebooks until Baldi catches you or you quit the game. This mode has two difficulty levels: easy and hard. The higher the difficulty level, the faster Baldi moves and the more math problems you have to solve.

  • Demo style: This is a mode that was added in another update of the game. In this mode, you play as a student who visits Baldi's schoolhouse to collect seven notebooks for your friend. However, this mode is based on an earlier version of the game that was made for the Meta Game Jam. This means that some of the features and characters that were added later are not present in this mode. For example, there is no Principal of the Thing or Gotta Sweep in this mode. This mode has only one difficulty level: normal.

The Gameplay Mechanics

Baldi Baldi is a first-person horror-comedy game that takes place in a 3D schoolhouse with randomly generated layouts. You can use your mouse to look around and your keyboard to move and interact with objects. You can also use your mouse wheel or number keys to switch between different items that you can find or buy in the game.

Your main goal in the game is to collect notebooks that are scattered around the schoolhouse. To collect a notebook, you have to enter a classroom and click on it. Then, you have to solve three math problems that are displayed on your screen. The first two problems are usually simple arithmetic questions that you can answer easily. However, the third problem is always impossible to solve correctly; it is either a garbled mess of numbers and symbols or a question that has no answer.

Every time you get a math problem wrong (which is inevitable for the third problem), Baldi gets angry and starts chasing you around the school house with his ruler. You can hear him say things like "I hear every door you open" or "Let's play!" as he gets closer to you. You have to run away from him and avoid getting caught by him. If he catches you, he will hit you with his ruler and send you back to the start of the game.

However, Baldi is not the only threat in the game. There are also other characters that roam around the schoolhouse and can help or hinder you in various ways. Some of them are friendly, some of them are hostile, and some of them are neutral. You have to learn how to deal with each of them and use them to your advantage or avoid them altogether.

For example, there is Principal of the Thing, who is the head of the school. He will patrol the hallways and enforce the rules of the school. If he sees you breaking any rule, such as running, entering faculty rooms, or using items, he will send you to detention for 15 seconds. However, he can also help you by stopping Baldi from entering the detention room or by giving you a quarter if you answer his phone.

Another example is Playtime, who is a girl who likes to play jump rope. She will follow you around and ask you to play with her. If you agree, she will make you jump rope 5 times while singing a song. This will slow you down and make you vulnerable to Baldi. However, you can also use her to distract Baldi by making him jump rope with her instead.

There are many other characters in the game that have their own behaviors and effects on the gameplay. You can find a table with a brief description of each character below:

The Secrets and Easter Eggs of Baldi Baldi

The Hidden Endings

Baldi Baldi has some hidden endings that you can unlock by doing certain actions or meeting certain conditions in the game. These endings reveal some secrets and surprises about the game's lore and story. Here are some of the hidden endings and how to get them:

  • The Secret Ending: This is the true ending of the game that you can get by collecting all seven notebooks and escaping the schoolhouse in story mode. However, this is not as easy as it sounds, because you have to do it without breaking any rule or using any item. This means that you have to avoid Principal of the Thing, It's a Bully, Playtime, 1st Prize, Arts and Crafters, Cloudy Copter, and Joe, as well as any vending machines or lockers. If you manage to do this, you will see a special cutscene where Baldi congratulates you for being a good student and gives you a special prize: a bus ride with him to his field trip.

  • The Field Trip Ending: This is an alternate ending of the game that you can get by collecting all seven notebooks and escaping the schoolhouse in story mode with the special prize from the secret ending. This means that you have to do the same thing as the secret ending, but with the bus ticket in your inventory. If you do this, you will see another cutscene where Baldi takes you to his field trip: a camping site in the woods. There, he will ask you to collect firewood for him while he sets up the campfire. However, things go wrong when Baldi accidentally sets the forest on fire and runs away, leaving you behind.

  • The Demo Ending: This is an ending of the game that you can get by collecting all seven notebooks and escaping the schoolhouse in demo style mode. This means that you have to play the game as it was in the original version that was made for the Meta Game Jam. If you do this, you will see a cutscene where Baldi breaks the fourth wall and tells you that the game is over and that he hopes you enjoyed it. He will also tell you to check out his website for more information about him and his game.

  • The Endless Ending: This is an ending of the game that you can get by collecting 25 notebooks in endless mode. This means that you have to play the game in endless mode and keep collecting notebooks until you reach 25. If you do this, you will see a cutscene where Baldi admits that he is impressed by your skills and that he has no more notebooks for you. He will then tell you that he has a surprise for you: a cake with candles that spell out "YOU WIN". However, before you can celebrate, Baldi reveals that the cake is actually a bomb and explodes.

The References and Parodies

Baldi Baldi is full of references and parodies to various aspects of 90s culture, education, gaming, horror, and internet memes. Some of them are obvious, while others are subtle or hidden. Here are some of the references and parodies that you can find in the game:

  • The Title: The title of the game, Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, is a parody of Mario's Early Years: Fun with Numbers, an educational game from 1994 that features Mario teaching math to children.

  • The Graphics: The graphics of the game are intentionally low-quality and pixelated, resembling those of old edutainment games from the 90s. The game also uses dithering, a technique that creates color gradients by mixing pixels of different colors.

  • The Music: The music of the game is composed of MIDI files, which are simple digital audio files that were commonly used in old games from the 90s. The music also changes depending on the situation, such as when Baldi gets angry or when you enter a special room.

  • The Sound Effects: The sound effects of the game are mostly made by McGonigal himself, using his voice or other objects. Some of them are also taken from royalty-free sources, such as the "ding" sound that plays when you get a math problem right or the "buzzer" sound that plays when you get a math problem wrong.

  • The Voice Acting: The voice acting of the game is also mostly done by McGonigal himself, using different pitches and tones to create different voices for the characters. Some of them are also taken from online text-to-speech generators, such as the voice of 1st Prize or the voice of the You Can Think Pad.

  • The Characters: The characters of the game are based on or inspired by various characters or concepts from 90s culture, education, gaming, horror, and internet memes. For example, Baldi is based on McGonigal's real-life math teacher, Principal of the Thing is based on a character from Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, Playtime is based on a character from Barney and Friends, It's a Bully is based on a character from Hey Arnold!, Gotta Sweep is based on a character from The Simpsons, Arts and Crafters is based on a character from Sesame Street, 1st Prize is based on a character from The Brave Little Toaster, Filename2 is based on a glitch from Pokemon Red and Blue, Cloudy Copter is based on a character from Kirby's Dream Land, and Joe is based on a character from Family Guy.

  • The Items: The items of the game are also based on or inspired by various items or concepts from 90s culture, education, gaming, horror, and internet memes. For example, the quarter is based on the currency used in arcade games, the BSODA is based on the blue screen of death error message from Windows computers, the Zesty Bar is based on the Zagnut candy bar, the Energy Flavored Zesty Bar is based on the Powerthirst energy drink parody, the Tape Player is based on the cassette tape player device, the Alarm Clock is based on the alarm clock device, the Principal's Keys are based on the keys used by school principals, the Baldi Anti Hearing and Disorienting Tape is based on the ear rape meme, the Safety Scissors are based on the scissors used by children in school, and the Grappling Hook is based on the grappling hook device used by superheroes.

  • The Math Problems: The math problems of the game are also based on or inspired by various math problems or concepts from 90s culture, education, gaming, horror, and internet memes. For example, some of the math problems are simple arithmetic questions that are easy to solve, some of them are impossible to solve correctly because they are either garbled or have no answer, some of them are references to other games or media such as Minecraft or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, some of them are jokes or puns such as "What is 9 + 10?" or "What is love?", and some of them are hidden messages or codes that reveal secrets or surprises about the game.

The Glitches and Bugs

Baldi Baldi has some glitches and bugs that can affect your gameplay experience in different ways. Some of them are intentional and part of the game's design, while others are unintentional and result from errors or limitations in the game's development. Here are some of the glitches and bugs that you can encounter in the game:

  • The Notebook Glitch: This is an intentional glitch that occurs when you collect all seven notebooks in story mode. Instead of ending the game normally, the game will glitch out and show a distorted image of Baldi's face with a loud noise. This is meant to scare the player and add to the horror aspect of the game.

  • The Door Glitch: This is an unintentional glitch that occurs when you open or close a door in the game. Sometimes, the door will not open or close properly, and will either get stuck or disappear. This can cause problems for the player, such as blocking their way, trapping them in a room, or exposing them to Baldi. This glitch is caused by a bug in the game's physics engine that makes the doors behave unpredictably.

  • The Character Glitch: This is an unintentional glitch that occurs when a character in the game interacts with another character or object in the game. Sometimes, the character will not interact correctly, and will either clip through or get stuck on another character or object. This can cause problems for the player, such as preventing them from using an item, escaping a character, or reaching an exit. This glitch is also caused by a bug in the game's physics engine that makes the characters behave unpredictably.

  • The Item Glitch: This is an unintentional glitch that occurs when you use an item in the game. Sometimes, the item will not work properly, and will either have no effect, have the wrong effect, or have an unintended effect. This can cause problems for the player, such as wasting an item, harming themselves, or helping Baldi. This glitch is caused by a bug in the game's programming that makes the items behave inconsistently.

A: There is no definitive answer to how to beat Baldi Baldi, as the game is different and unpredictable every time you play it. However, there are some general tips and strategies that can help you survive and escape the schoolhouse. Some of them are:

  • Learn the layout of the schoolhouse and memorize the locations of the notebooks, items, rooms, exits, and characters.

  • Solve the math problems as fast and as accurately as possible. The more mistakes you make, the angrier and faster Baldi will get.

  • Use the items wisely and strategically. Some items can help you slow down or distract Baldi, some items can help you speed up or escape other characters, and some items can help you open doors or get more items.

  • Avoid breaking any rules or using any items in front of Principal of the Thing. He will send you to detention if he catches you doing anything wrong.

  • Avoid getting too close to Playtime or It's a Bully. They will either make you waste time or take an item from you.
